 My massive Charlize Theron obsession this year came as a surprised – out of nowhere, her husky voice, her flawless looks and her unbelievable vulnerability in Yong Adult came together fell into place, and I realized she's my current "favorite actress". But it was the youngest Olsen who truly made my year, in a totally different way. Her face sweet as a peach, her red carpet choices ripe and random, and her performance in Martha Macy May Marlene as haunting and fresh as a newcomer can get, she portrays the ultimate, earthy-yet-fabulous, girl crush. And Charlize, she'll always be Charlize.

האולימפיאדה "באה טוב" השנה. קיץ, שיממון פוליטי ותרבותי, מה עוד נשאר מלבד לבהות באצנים בטייץ ושחייניות עם ציפורניים בצבע הדגל? אולי בגלל שכל כך התאמצנו לבהות, או אולי בגלל הלוקיישן המעולה – לונדון, האולימפיאדה סיפקה את הסחורה מעל ומעבר, עם כוכבים סקסיים, טרנדים אופנתיים, רמזים להומו-ארוטיקה ובדיחות זקפה, מייקל פלפס, ניצחונות מדהימים וטקסי פתיחה ונעילה שאשכרה הצליחו להפוך לשיחת היום. לא הבאנו מדליות? אולי זה בגלל שלא היו לנו נציגים עם שפם הורס או צמות מגניבות. משהו לחשוב עליו.

It was the timing –flat, boring, zero-happening summer, which made the Olympics so desirable. Or was it the cool location – London, the place where Spice Girls come to die? As long as we got to stare, adoringly and passively, at the runners, the swimmers and the athletes, it didn't really matter. 2012 Olympics delivered the goods, including sexy stars, homo-erotic memes, erection jokes, surprising triumphs and some great hair and makeup trends, not to mention the over-the-top opening and closing ceremonies, and rightfully became my prime summer entertainment.

Where to begin? Walter White got kinky and ruthless, and his nemesis Mike was one shady character. Don started losing it on Mad Men. The normally cuddly William H. Macy turned into drunk-ass Frank on Shameless, Wilfred, the horniest dog alive, disturbed the neighborhood peace, the incredible Michael Fassbender fucked and lied his was through Shame and the sleazy, soon-to-be-irrelevant stripper in Magic Mike, courtesy of the sweaty, ripped Mathew Mcconaghey, disgusted and charmed us. It was, undoubtedly, the year of men gone bad, so bad it was a pleasure to watch. No wonder my most active Pinterest board is all about that.

כמו תמיד, גיליתי את המגזין המושלם הזה באיחור אופנתי – הבלוגרית ליסה וורינגר מפורטלנד, עמה נפגשתי לקפה, סיפרה לי עליו בעיניים נוצצות, וכמובן שלקח לי יותר מחודש לרכוש את אחת המהדורות (מתוך 8 עד כה, סה"כ). מדובר, חברים, בדור הבא של המגזינים, לא פחות, ובמוצר נפלא שמספק לכל האמריקאים המצטיינים שמעורבים בו סיבה להיות גאים. הקונספט גאוני (לא אגלה לכם), הצילומים מרהיבים והטקסטים רגישים והיסטריים בדיוק במידה הנכונה. חפשו אותו באמזון, הוא יעשה לכם את 2013.

As always, I discovered this amazing publication fashionably late – the street fashion blogger Lisa Waringer from Portland told me about it over coffee, and it took me a month to buy an issue (there are 8 so far). Kinfolk, folks, is the future of print magazines – expensive and sleek, it has a genius concept (you'll have to find out yourself), state of the art photography, just the right amount of hipster, and an overall aura of quality and excitement. Look it up on Amazon and let it make your 2013.

מודה ומתוודה, קומדיות מעולם לא היו הז'אנר הטלוויזיוני החביב עלי. רוק 30? בסדר, לא נפלתי. מחלקת נוף וגנים? משעשע, מספיק בקושי. אבל כשמצאתי את עצמי צוחקת בקול יותר מפעם אחת בכל פרק נתון של הסדרה החמודה מהמשוחקת היטב הזו, לא נותר אלא להכתיר את ה"בחורה החדשה" כחביבתי הבלתי מעורערת. זואי דשנל מושלמת לתפקיד המורה שמסרבת להתבגר, השותפים שלה – שמיט המוגזם, ניק הרגיש בסתר ווינסטון הקלולסי, קולעים בול, והסיפורים שהחבורה נקלעת אליהם מצליחים להצחיק מבלי להיות מופרכים. הידד, מדובר בסדרה הקומית המושלמת.

I admit comedies never were my favorite TV genre. 30 Rock? Only occasional giggles. Parks and Recreation? Amusing, that's all. But when I found myself laughing, numerous time per episode, while watching New Girl, I had no choice but to declare this quirky show my new best comic friend. Zooey Deschanel is perfect as a teacher with growing up issues, and her roommates – the douchy Schmidt, the secretly sensitive Nick and the clueless Winston, are spot on. Believable yet hilarious plots add to the charm, so as the little nuances and cameos (Jamie Lee Curtis!). Enough said.

הו, הומלנד. כמה צינית הייתי כשגיליתי שאת עתידה להיוולד בעקבות המכירה של "חטופים" לארה"ב. כמה זמן חיכיתי לפני שהתמסרתי גם אני להייפ והתחלתי, בפיגור אחר שני השותפים שלי, לצפות בעונתך הראשונה. במשך חודש שלם הסתובבנו אפופים ועצבניים, עוד רגע עושים "ספויילר" זה לזו, מחכים בקוצר רוח לפרק הבא. כעת, עם הסוף של העונה השנייה, אפשר לומר בבירור מי הכוכב האמיתי של ערבוביית הריגול-אקשן-דרמה המעולה שרקחו ב – Showtime: האישה נושכת השפתיים, מגלגלת העיניים ושוברת החוקים הכי נוגעת ללב בטלוויזיה, קארי מתיסון האחת והיחידה. לפרקים סקסית כמו נמרה, לפרקים אבודה כמו ילדה קטנה, קארי בהחלט עשתה לי את השנה כולה, בקלות.

Oh, Homeland. How cynical I was when I found out you'll be based on the Israeli show "Abducted". How long I waited before joining the ranks of my roommates to enjoy you – for a whole month we'd walk around frazzled and tense, avoiding spoilers and waiting for the next episode to drop. Now, by the end of season 2, it's safe to announce the real star of this spy-politics-drama hot mess: the lip biting, the eyes rolling, the impossibly neurotic and the most touching, ground- breaking female character on TV right now - Carrie Mathison. One moment, sexy as a beast, another-lost like a little girl, Carrie was a brave and challenging year-maker.

כולנו אוהבים קאמבק טוב. אבל יש קאמבק מהונדס, סינטטי ומאוס (בריטני, מדונה) ויש קאמבק שמרגיש כמו סאגה הוליוודית שבוימה למופת. כזה הוא הקאמבק של בן אפלק, לשעבר שחקן גרוע שהתחתן באגביות עם ג'ניפר לופז, לימים בעלה המסור של ג'ניפר אחרת, גארדנר, אב לשלושה ילדים חמודים, עדיין שחקן די גרוע, אבל, שזה יותר שווה, במאי מוערך שעוד רגע יהיה מועמד לאוסקר. התקשורת האמריקאית כל כך נהנית להגות "בן אפלק" ו"איכות" באותה נשימה, שקשה לא להתמסר לשמחה טובת הלב, המהולה בהפתעה, על כך שאפלק, בחור טוב סה"כ, הצליח להמציא את עצמו בחדש בצורה שלא עושה לאף אחד בחילה. וזה שהוא פתאום כל כך סקסי, עם הזיפים והסוודרים האלה, זה כבר סיפור אחר.

Everyone loves a good comeback. But there are those PR-born, predictable comebacks, and then there are those who seem to be written by visionaries. Such is the comeback of Ben Afflek, not until long ago a shitty actor who mistook Jennifer Lopez for a wife, and now a solid husband of another Jennifer, Gardner, a proud father of 3, still a pretty shitty actor, but –it's even better – also an appraised and soon to be Oscar nominated film director. When the media has so much fun saying "Affleck" and "quality" in the same sentence, it's hard not to join this good-hearted party. And the fact he suddenly turned quite sexy, with those chunky sweaters? Another story completely.

היא הסתפרה וצבעה לבלונד. ג'ובאני ריביסי עזב אותה כדי להתחתן עם הדוגמנית אג'ניס דיין בחתונת בזק מוזרה. היא התראיינה במרירות ודיברה על שינוי. הקאמבק של קט פאוור, הזמרת בעלת קול הקטיפה המלטף והיחידה שלצליליה אני יכולה לעבוד וללמוד, הושלם השנה עם האלבום החדש והמעולה Sun והיה מרגש במיוחד עבורי, שכן הצלחתי לתפוס אותה בהופעה חיה בארה"ב. מגושמת, מכושפת ונפלאה, היא השלימה את מסע הכיבוש של הלב שלי בשעה וחצי של שיכרון חושים. ו – The Greatest? עדיין האלבום הכי great לדיכאון מתוק.

She cut her hair and colored it blond. Giovanni Ribisi dumped her to secretly marry the model Anegys Deyn. She threw bitter interviews and spoke of change. This year, the re-emergence of Cat Power, the velvety-voiced siren and the only vocalist whose sound goes well with my writing and studying, was marked by a personal experience - I caught her performing live in Boston. Bewitching, adorably clumsy and possessed by her talent, she completed the conquest of my heart within two hours of pure magic. And "The Greatest"? Still ever so great.

נהוג לדבר על "סרטי השנה" ולבחור כל מיני דרמות קטנות וחשובות, או בלוקבסטרים שהשפיעו על השיח הציבורי, או משהו כזה. אבל "חייבים לדבר על קווין" בבימויה של לין רמסי, שהוקרן בארץ באדיבות סרטי לב, הוא אף אחד מאלה, אלא סתם סרט מצמרר, סמיך, מופרע ועשוי ביד אמן שגורם לטילדה סווינטון הקפואה בדרך כלל לעורר הזדהות. גם השחקנים האחרים – ג'ון סי ריילי החביב בדרך כל ועזרא מילר, התגלית שהוליווד רוצה לטפח, מתעלים על עצמם ושופכים את נשמתם לסרט שנשאר איתי שבועות ארוכים לאחר ההקרנה.

A good year summary is not complete without a stand-out movie – a well crafted indie or a huge blockbuster that had us all abuzz. We Need To Talk About Kevin, directed by Lynne Ramsay, doesn't fall into any of the categories – it's just a disturbed, highly atmospheric film, that delivers Tilda Swinton in her finest and sticks to you weeks and weeks after viewing. The unconventional and the opposite of politically-correct topic is the biggest bonus here, but so is the growing, beautifully shot feeling that's something really fucked up is about to happen.

Stuff that made 2012 annoying: The discourse around Lana Del Ray and the singer herself, Katie and Tom's divorce saga (as boring and "believable" as their marriage), Jessica Biel (the most unjustified woman on the red carpet), Weeds' poor ending, the bestseller The Perks Of Being a Wall Flower (read it and come on board with me), Anna Karenina – the movie (Keira Knightley? As a passionate Russian? Really?), the Royal Family, especially Will and Kate. Let's tuck them away in Baby Gap and never talk about them again.



Yes, a Gift Guide!

As always around this time of year, we are bombarded with "gift guides" – collages of sweet little nothings and knick-knacks that magazines want you to buy. Do you really need a stuffed bear shaped bottle warmer? Irrelevant. Well, as Christmas-Chanukah-New Year is in full swing already, I decided to come up with my own gift guide. And just to eliminate doubts, I DO need those gifts, people! Maybe you'll find them as adorable as I do.

1. Every girl could use a pretty red dress, especially around this time of year. This גרטרוד creation is somewhat conservative, yet subtly sexy.

2. Madewell ear muffs, to keep me warm during the cold rainy days Northern California can surprise you with. I'd go with the classic beige tone though – nothing pink or flashy. These ones are pretty perfect.

3. A bespoke limited edition powder compact with my zodiac sign on it (there are plenty of other signs to go around, of course) – Estee Lauder somehow managed to read my mind on this one.

4. A cruiser bicycle – sky-blue, light and fast like the wind. I wouldn't mind trading my old scruffy bike for this beauty.

5. Cooking books! One can never have enough. I fell in love with Yotam Ottolenghi's "Plenty" a while ago, as it makes me crave vegetables I've never heard of before. "Edible Selby" is a beautiful, wacky second choice.

6. So what if I've never seen a Bond movie? O.P.I The Living Daylights polish, from the Skyfall collection, is the perfect choice for the holidays – glittery, happy, a little mischievous.

7. A chunky sweater – did I mention it's cold here, people? Neutral color, comforting texture – H&M folks know how to make them.

8. When the weather is grey and gloomy, I turn to color blocking. I saw these, by Coloblock Shop on Etsy, in Instyle's gift guide actually, and fell in love with them on the spot. Sometimes gift guides do come handy.

9. Pickles and jerky – food passions for the rustic girl. When I found out about this clever New York Mouth service, promising you'll get a monthly package of tasters (how awesome is that?), I almost picked up the phone right away. Too bad the delivery is so limited.

10. I wouldn't call myself a Andy Warhol fan. Cute packaging, however? Always a plus. NARS collaboration with the "15 minutes of fame" artists' work it too good to resist, especially when Debbie Harry is gracing the eye shadows box.

11. I love big jewelry as much as I like it colorful. As I'm always annoyed by the slippery qualities of the bracelet, a cuff is a far better choice – this Fiona Paxton bling (waiting for the Israeli readers at Alma botique) is a great candidate.

12. Hell yeah, a Navajo printed umbrella! That's all I have to say on this one.

13. Who could resist a dotty shoe? Those Opening Ceremony booties are fun and quirky enough, but also appear to be comfortable.

14. And finally, something for the soul. I was totally blown away this year by Cindy Sherman's exhibition at SFMOMA – her images are so powerful, and her transformations are spot-on. If I can't have an original piece of art by this amazing woman, a print will do.

Sunny in San Francisco

חזרתי לקליפורניה, וסן פרנציסקו קידמה את פני בשמש נדירה. זה כבר שלושה חודשים שאני כאן, והחיים בגזרת Target וחברותיה מתחילים להרגיש כמו הדבר האמיתי. לא הזכרתי את סן פרנציסקו בסיבוב הקודם שלי כאן לפני כחודשיים, אבל כעת, אחרי שהלכתי להסתפר בה והסתובבתי ברחובותיה כמו שצריך, אני חייבת להודות - זוהי עיר לא רעה בכלל, שעשתה לי חשק לצבעים עליזים (no pun intended) ולהדפסים פולקלוריסטיים.

I'm back to California, and San Francisco had welcomed me with rare sunny weather. On my second round here, after dedicating some time to walking, eating, and cutting my hair in the city, I can admit it's not as blah as I thought. It sure made me crave bright colors and folklore prints.

אי אפשר בלי המלצות, אם כבר חזרנו לערים הגדולות. יש לי רק 2 היום, ושתיהן קשורות לאוכל. ללא ספק עוד אחזור לעיר ואמשיך לעדכן.

 1. סן פרנציסקו ידועה באוכל המעולה שלה, והמבחר אינסופי: ראשית, חפשו את המקום הקטנטן שנקרא Yo Yo's - לא רק בגלל מרק האודון הטעים והסושי הטרי, במחירים מצחיקים ביותר, אלא גם כי החיפוש אחריו יביא אתכם לאחד האזורים היפים בעיר - Jackson Square, שכונה שכולה גלריות ובתי עסק חמודים. אם כבר אתם שם, למה שלא תקפצו לבית הספר של Aveda - חברת טיפוח השיער האיכותית שמחזיקה במוסד לימודי בעיר ומציעה תספורת וצבע זולים בחצי (בחצי!!) מכל מקום אחר, הודות לעובדה שסטודנטים עושים את העבודה. אה, ויש גם מסאז'ים ב-40 דולר לשעה, ללא ספק המחיר הזול שראיתי בארה"ב. לא מצאתי תור בזמן, אבל נראה שווה מאוד.

2. מה שלא תעשו, תעצרו ליד ה - Creme Brulee Cart וקנו לכם מיני קרם ברולה ששורפים במקום. זה אדיר. זה מרגש. זה מתוק. זה חדשני. זה זה.

I can't skip some "to do" pointers if we're back to the big city. I got only 2 this time, and both of them have to do with food.

1. I stumbled upon this place, Yo Yo's, and can't help by recommend it. Not only the Udon soup is cheap and the suahi fresh, this tiny place will also bring you to one of the prettiest neighborhoods, around Jackson Square. Plus, it's close to Aveda's beauty school, where you can pamper yourself for a price much cheaper then everything else. Couldn't find an appointment on time, but I'm sure it's worth it.

2. Whatever you do in town, please make sure you eat a mini brulee, burnt on the spot, the Creme Brulee Cart. It's delicious. It's innovative. It's little. It's the thing.

Garage Sales Heaven: Part 2 + Video Magic

The photoshoot, albeit blurry and rather dark, did seem to be to your liking, folks. Without delay (not really) - here's part 2, featuring an awesome velvet dress, and a very hot girl in mini. Oh, and don't forget to watch my editing debut, the tell-all garage sales video! 

סדרת הצילומים, אפלה ומטושטשת ככל שתהיה, היתה לטעמכם, כך נראה. אם כן, קבלו ללא דחייה (טוב, לא בדיוק), את חלק ב', ובו שמלת קטיפה מדהימה פוגשת את המטבח וגם בחורה אחת סקסית במיוחד במיני. ואל תשכחי לצפות בווידאו שערכתי בעצמי! כן כן.

So a few words about  the video: capturing the quircky, wonderful world of garage sales is virtually impossible. But I tried my best - and I want to thank here all the cool people who were kind enough not to kick me, and above all - Vera, the queen of garage sales, who drove me around and whose voice and stories you hear out of the frame. She's too shy to be videotaped, but not shy at all when it comes to snatching the best finds!

Garage Sales Heaven

I briefly mentioned garage sales in the California post – but really, words cannot describe the natural high a true fashion-crazy would experience while browsing through piles and racks of someone else's treasures. Granted, there might be some OMG moments – considering someone actually BOUGHT and WORE the hideous piece of fabric you're holding, but also, some moments of pure magic, with vintage finds and high street surprises hiding in those piles.

My garage sales Saturday was pretty amazing, I'd say – one girl had great Forever 21 bits, another – a whole lot of vintage prom dresses and accessories, compiled to a huge pile and sold to me for a funny price of 20$. The lucky hunt, plus the beautiful house in Long Beach I stayed in at the time, led to an inevitable deed – the fashion shoot! I proudly present the first half of the result – shot by Haley in her bohemian hub on Covina Street, the clothes – courtesy of garage-sale wonderland. Ta-Da!!

הזכרתי בקצרה את מכירות החצר המגניבות של קליפורניה בפוסט הזה, אבל בינינו – מילים לא יכולות לתאר את ההתרגשות החייתית מעט שחובבת אופנה אמיתית (שקמה מוקדם ב-6 בבוקר לכבוד האירוע, יש לציין) חווה לנוכח הערימות והמתלים, שעמוסים בכל סוג אפשרי של בגד. לצד הבזקי טעם רע מכאיבים ממש (ולכן מצחיקים כל כך), השבת שלי, שכללה 7 שעות של מכירות בשכונות סביב לונג ביץ', הוכתרה כהצלחה – פריטי וינטג' מפתיעים, בגדים של Forever21 ועוד מותגים שאחר כך הופתעתי לראות בחנויות, בואו נגיד שחזרתי הביתה עם שקית ההפתעות המושלמת.

המציאות, בתוספת הבית המהמם בו גרתי בלונג ביץ', מלא בפיצ'פקס וסבוך באופן בוהמייני למדי, הובילו למעשה המתבקש – הפקת אופנה! מצולמת על ידי היילי במצלמת האייפון שלי (אי לכך, האיכות הלא משהו), ההפקה עושה כבוד לכמה מהפריטים האדירים שנשלפו מכל אותן הערימות והקופסאות, ואני גאה להציג כאן את החלק הראשון.

Autumn in New York: Valuable lessons

Autumn in New York City is this lucky time of the year when the heat disappears and takes the humiliating, yet necessary, option of flip-flops with them, but it's not too cold to be fashionable yet. It's then when the streets of Manhattan, that is if you're not too busy looking (and pointing, in some cases) at the famous buildings, become winter wear's best catwalk. Every coat you can think of, every shoe you eyed in the recent Vogue magazine, every ridiculous trend you secretly contemplated to adopt, they're all marching in front of you, bumping into you when you cross the street and push into your (less fashionable) shell on the subway. When you come from a place less particular about winter clothes, New York can be one hell of a manual, with Dos and DONTs all over the budget scale. Here's a little selection of what I've learned over just a week:

    a fashion victim – not when the next girl is wearing a turban and studded UGGs.

4. Autumn can be the most elegant of times, and maybe your only chance to air your new accessories and

   that impractical dress you just bought. So go for it.

Besides teaching you a wardrobe lesson, New York autumn is excels in making you, the under-dressed tourist, feel marginalized yet striving for perfection. Luckily, there are plenty of cheap high-street shops you can stop by and get your fashion fix. Just two more things come to mind: whatever you do, do not purchase those ear-muffs. Although warm and tempting, they will immediately disclose your foreignness. And, no matter how confused you are, don't go and buy that huge, puffy Gap vest. There's no way your new open-toe booties will go with it.

Oh, Arizona: Part 2

כשמטיילים, פוגשים מטיילים אחרים. רובם לא "תיירים" טיפוסיים, בלי מלונות מוזמנים מראש וטיולים מאורגנים, ועדיין - חלק ניכר מהם דבקים במסלולים מוכרים עם שמות גדולים. בארה"ב, הגדולה כל כך, זה נכון כפליים - פארק יוסמיטי! סן פרנציסקו!! הגראנד קניון... וכן הלאה. לא כולם מצליחים לקחת צעד הצידה וליהנות מההפתעות הפחות מיידיות שאמריקה מצטיינת בהן לדעתי. אריזונה, מדינה שיש בה כל כך הרבה יותר מהחלק הדרומי של הגראנד קניון, היא המקום האידיאלי ליצירתיות תיירותית עם קצת יותר תעוזה.

Traveling, you meet all kinds of people. Some of them are not your average tourist - no fancy hotels and pre-booked tours here, but still, somehow, they tend to stick to the big names and the highlighted parts of the Lonely Planet. Yosemite!! The Golden Gate Bridge!! The less immediate, the less glorified parts of the  US, a country so rich with little quirks, are often overlooked. Arizona, a state with so much more than the Grand Canyon to it, is a great place to start practicing "off the beaten path" tourism.

צעד ראשון: פסטיבל בהפתעה / Surprise Festival  

פיניקס, בירת אריזונה, היא עיר אפרורית למדי, שמתנחמת בעיירת הסטודנטים שלה, Tempe. שם יש כמה ברים מצטיינים, מסעדות כאילו-טובות ומדי פעם, אירועים כמו Tour De Fat. הפסטיבל הנודד במימון הבירה הבלגית Fat Tire מנסה לקדם אג'נדה ירוקה וידידותית לסביבה בדמותם של אופניים (במקום רכב, כמובן - מאוד מציאותי בארה"ב), אבל כל זה שולי לתחפושות, לשתיית הבירה המוגברת ולהופעות, שליום אחד הופכים את המציאות העירונית למיני Burning Man. הפסטיבל נוחת מדי שנה בכמה ערים רנדומליות, ושווה חיפוש ולו בשביל לראות כל כך הרבה "אינדיאנים" במקום אחד. האינדיאנים האמיתיים באריזונה, כך שמעתי, נוטים להתגורר במקומות מרוחקים יותר מהציוויליזציה.

Phoenix, Arizona's gloomy capital, comforts itself in the presence of student town Tempe. There, some decent bars and pretentious restaurants may be spotted, and if a festival like Tour De Fat to happen, this will be the destination. An annual green-agenda bike celebration is mostly about funny costumes, too much beer and some great concerts. Worth the follow-up, if only to see so many "native Americans" in one place - the real native Americans of Arizona, so they say, tend to live a bit further from beer and music.

צעד שני: מוזריות בדרך / Roadtrip quircks

הכבישים באריזונה, אפילו כאלה שאינם Route 66 המפורסם, מלאים בהפתעות הומוריסטיות. שלט המכריז על "מטבח אמיש" שמוביל למסעדה מעופשת שאין בה שום תזכורת לכת המסקרנת, קריצות סקסיות או כאלה שמתכתבות עם התקוות של המטייל הממוצע ל"משהו אותנטי" (אוהלי טיפי? בבקשה), צריך רק לפקוח את העיניים. נכון, פאלם ספרינגס היא לא חלק מאריזונה, אבל זה בדרך (אם נוסעים מלוס אנג'לס) ולא יכולתי לוותר על מרלין מונרו הענקית.

Arizona roads, even the ones who don't go by the name Route 66, are dotted with funny surprises. "Amish" promises that lead to a little restaurant with none of the cult connection, sexy word-games and displays that cater to the traveler's hopes for "something authentic" (tipi tents? you got it), you just have to open your eyes and watch. Palm Springs might be not in the state (it's on the way though, if you start in LA) but I just couldn't leave out the huge Marylin Monroe. Epic.

צעד שלישי: עיירות מקסימות / Little towns

כולם (טוב, אולי לא כולם) מכירים את סדונה - עיירת נופש עם כמה מהנופים היפים בארה"ב, שמפורסמת, למרות הנופים, בעיקר בזכות ריכוז החנויות ה"רוחניות" שבה. פחות מטיילים מכירים את כביש 89A, שעושה מין לולאה מסדונה ומטה וטומן בחובו (כן! ממש "טומן", אין מילה אחרת) נוף עוצר נשימה ממש, בדידות מופלאה, וכמה עיירות שלעצור בהן מרגיש כמו חשיפת סוד כמוס. אנחנו עצרנו ב - Jerome, עיירת כורים עתיקה עם אוכלוסייה של כ- 400 איש שבימים אלה מתפקדת כמרכז אמנות ובילוי לאנשי הסביבה. קטנה, משעשעת ומסודרת על גבעה, זו היתה אחת הנקודות המרגשות בטיול הזה. גם Prescott, עיר גדולה יותר עם כמה חנויות יד שנייה מעולות (באחת מהן נקנה החליפה עם הנקודות מהפוסט הקודם) מרגישה כמו תגלית.

Everyone knows Sedona, the spiritual hub and the scenery, etc. Fewer people are familiar with road 89A, that loops from Sedona back to road 40 and overlooks some of the most breathtaking views I've ever seen. Aside from the lonely, beautiful hills and valleys, the road hits some pretty cool towns. Jerome, an old mining tow and now the artsy, funky weekend getaway of the area (only 400 population on a week day) has an eery, secretive feel to it, and it's simply a must. Prescott, a bigger, slightly more urban town with some awesome dive bars and second hand stores, also provided one or two unforgettable moments.

ולבסוף, הטבע / And finally some nature

אחרי כל זה, ועוד לא התחלתי לגרד את קצה המפה, חייבים להודות שאריזונה נהדרת גם באופן טבעי, ללא כל הגימיקים. הכבישים, שעוברים במדבר שטוח המאפשר לראות עד ההרים, הגרנד קניון המלכותי, ה - Oak Creek Canyon המהפנט של סדונה, ועוד כמה הפתעות - ביניהן האתר המקודש והמרגיע מאוד Muntezuma Well, כל אלה משלימים את התמונה והופכים את אריזונה למדינה מושלמת למדי - למי שלא מחפש משהו גרנדיוזי, מפורסם ויקר, ומוכן להסתפק בסתם קסם.

And after all, there's no escaping the natural treasures. The desert, open as far as the eye can see, the overwhelming Grand Canyon, the unbelievable Oak Creek Canyon of Sedona, calmer and more accessible, and a few more gems, such as the sacred Montezuma Well, all join to make Arizona a pretty perfect state - for someone who's not into big and famous, but willing to compromise for simply pure magic.
